Job Description 

Position Title:  Executive Director


Reports to:  Board of Directors


Start Date: To be determined


Summary of Duties

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for leading The Hamilton Aviary into the next chapter of the organization’s history. In addition to overseeing finance, administration, fundraising and communications, this role will also be responsible for supervising a capital campaign and overseeing the construction of a new facility.


Your responsibilities

·         In partnership with the Board of Directors, develop and execute strategic plans, programs and policies to meet organizational goals and objectives

·         Foster positive relationships with external stakeholders, including individual donors, corporate sponsors and government agencies

·         Identify, foster and secure long-term relationships that translate to annual donations, major gifts and corporate sponsorships

·         Oversee administrative duties including assigning work and delegating responsibilities to volunteers, and ensuring all roles have clarity on performance standards and goals

·         Execute and oversee operations, programs and volunteer management, delegating volunteers when necessary

·         Keep the Board informed through monthly and annual reporting, for the AGM and liaising with auditors

·         In partnership with the Board of Directors, supervise the construction of a new facility ensuring that the project progresses on time, on budget and following the Donor’s wishes



·         Previous success in senior leadership role, with responsibility for staff and volunteers, and accountability to manage budgets

·         Previous experience in donor relations and fundraising, including demonstrated success closing major gifts, is a significant asset

·         Previous experience in executing a capital campaign is an asset

·         Superior communication skills, including technical writing for grant applications, storytelling and media relations skills

·         Aptitude for social media applications and technology, and ability to integrate traditional and social media tools to effectively execute special events and fundraising programs

·         Skilled at relationship building, with ability to foster productive partnerships with employees, volunteers, corporate sponsors and government representatives

·         Experience in wildlife and/or animal rescue and rehab environments is ideal, but not a requirement to lead our important work. An open mind, willingness to learn what The Friends of the Aviary will grow to need

·         Strong technical skills and comfort level with computers, MS Word, Accounting Software, Google Docs and other cloud-based technologies
