Hello our names are Aristotle, Sapphire, and Pearl!

Melopsittacus undulatus

DSC05223-Enhanced-NR_edited.jpg

We are a trio of American Budgerigars! We don't know how old we are, but we have lived all our lives with our previous family.

Unfortunately our mom developed Avian Fancier's Lung Disease, so for her health she was forced to rehome us.

The Friends of the Aviary were able to take us on after partnering with a retirement home to foster us. We are a chatty group that are not hand tame and need to find our forever home together.

What I Can Say

Nothing that we've shared, but we do chirp to each other

About Us and Other Budgies

First things first, who is who? Aristotle is the blue budgie pictured on the right, Pearl is the green and yellow budgie pictures above, and Sapphire is the purple budgie below! Did you know there are two types of budgies? We are Australian Budgies, more commonly known as American Budgies, and tend to be smaller and shorter than our English counterparts. Both species range in a variety of colours, but one visual difference is English Budgies tend to have larger, fluffier heads. Check out Roger's page to see the difference.

Our wild relatives in Australia are commonly found in open habitats like deserts, savannahs, scrublands, woodlands, and grasslands. If not in captivity budgies live an average of 3-4 years, but in captivity a properly cared for budgie can live 5-15 years. The oldest recorded budgie named Charlie in the UK lived to be 29 years old!

In the 1800s John Gould an artist and ornithologist described budgies as, "The most animated, cheerful little creatures you can possibly imagine" and we think he captured our personalities perfectly!

While some people don't hand tame or train their budgies that does not mean it can't be done. Lots of budgies can be taught tricks and will come when called. It is important to remember that even though budgies are one of the smallest companion birds, they still benefit from as much time, attention, and enrichment as a cockatoo, amazon, or macaw!

There is not a recorded population size of wild budgies but they are on the rise! Their IUCN status is Least Concern.

We are in FOTA's Foster Program

We are currently living at Grace Manor in Brampton, ON. We are keeping the residents of the retirement home entertained with our chatting and antics! They enjoy watching us fly around and help make food for us each month.

Although we are having fun, we are looking for our forever home! Think you might be the right fit? Apply to add us to your family.
