Hello we are Cocosh and Totosh!
Nymphicus hollandicus
We are a dynamic duo who need to stick together. Cocosh is 6 years old and has the most traditional Cockatiel colour mutation (grey, yellow, and white) and Totosh is 3 years old and has a lutino mutation (white and yellow).
Our mom reached out to The Friends of the Aviary about rehoming us because she had to suddenly and possibly permanently leave Canada due to unforeseen circumstances. She desperately wanted to bring us with her, but because of a fast turnaround time and jumping through hoops with the government she was not allowed to bring us. We were accepted to FOTA after only a couple days of them hearing about us and went to a foster home with two kids who adore us.

About Us and Other Cockatiels
Our ancestors lived in Australia and are commonly found in semi-arid (or dry) habitats, but always with water close by. Did you know that cockatiels are the smallest members of the cockatoo family? Cockatiels got their scientific name from the first Europeans to see them. Early settlers thought they were so beautiful that they named them after the nymph, a mythical creature.

There are many colour mutations when it comes to cockatiels, however they are not all found in the wild. Lutino Cockatiels like Totosh for example have a colour gene that is specifically bred in companion birds, it is not naturally occurring. The one thing that almost all cockatiels have in common (there are a few that don't) are their "orange cheeks." These "cheeks" are actually called ear coverts which protect and cover these birds sensitive ears.
In fact, Cockatiels are said to be the most popular bet bird in North America, likely due to their charismatic whistle and cute faces! Both of us can whistle to Verdi's Rigoletto and if you're happy and you know it! However, it is important to remember that even though cockatiels are one of the smaller companion birds, they still need as much time, attention, and enrichment as a Cockatoo, Amazon, or Macaw!

Because Cockatiels have a wide range and healthy wild population their IUCN status is listed as of Least Concern.

What we're up to Now
We are in Foster Care.
Unfortunately, after coming into care it was discovered we both have Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). While we only have mild symptoms (some feather loss under our chins) we are carriers to other birds so must remain isolated from other parrots. Our loving foster home that quarantined us are going to keep fostering and we will likely remain forever fosters.
