Hello my name is Babes!
Eclectus roratus

I am a 16 year old female Eclectus Parrot. My real name is Medusa, but I prefer to be called Babes (my mom only called me Medusa if I was in trouble!).
Eclectus parrots are one of the few species of parrots that are sexually dimorphic (the males and females look different). Females like me are red and purple and males like Kiwi are primarily green with some red and blue markings.
Interestingly, I have quite a few green feathers on my back and a two tone coloured beak which makes me even more special!

About Me and Other
Eclectus Parrots
My ancestors lived in the tropical rain forests of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, as well as Australia. When deciding on a place to live they look for tall, dense tree cover and water from the coast. There are 9 subspecies of Eclectus parrots, which are distinguished by where they live, their weight, and their slight colour differences.

Interestingly, wild Eclectus parrots don't really bond with their mates like other birds. They usually do not preen each other and if one leaves they find a new mate easily. In fact, they are more attached to their nesting site than to who they share it with!
I was a well loved bird from a home where circumstances changed and I my family knew they couldn't provide the standard of care I needed. I was also quite aggressive towards the other bird I lived with (I often screamed at him 😅), but now as the only bird in my foster home I am thriving! So far, I've shown a real fondness towards older men and am happy to step up and sit on their shoulders.

The Eclectus parrot's status given by the IUCN is listed as of Least Concern. They are considered as such because they have a wide range, even though their population size is in fact decreasing. They, like many parrots, are losing their habitat to urbanization and are trapped to be sold in the illegal pet trade.

What I'm up to Now
I have been Adopted!
I was in FOTA's foster program for just over a year until I found my forever home. I am so excited to say I was adopted by Safari Niagara! I have an amazing enclosure to move into once the weather warms up and I've met my new best friend Arthur. Safari Niagara is able to provide the extra veterinary care I need and I'm happy to report my feathers are growing in red and purple like they should!
Please come and visit me when Safari Niagara opens for the season!
