Hello my name
is Frosty!

Cacatua goffiniana

I am a 40+ year old Goffin's Cockatoo. FOTA isn't too sure just how old I am because I came to my previous home as a rescue. They had me for over 30 years! I may look all white, but I actually have pink feathers on my face and some yellow in my tail! Even though I also have a winter themed name I am not related to Snowball from The Hamilton Aviary.

I came to FOTA at the end of August after my primary caregiver passed away and my secondary caregiver ended up in the hospital.

About Me and Other
Goffin's Cockatoos

Another name for us Goffin's Cockatoos is the Tanimbar corella and we are one of the smallest birds in the cockatoo family. My ancestors lived in Indonesia, but have also been introduced to parts of Puerto Rico, Singapore, and Taiwan. In captivity, if cared for properly, it is estimated that my species can live 30 to 40 years.

Goffin's Cockatoos - like most parrots - are naturally curious. Combined with the dexterity in their feet, beak, and tongue, they make excellent explorers and innovators. We are so smart that we even use tools to access our favourite foods. From bark to twigs, these exotic birds have used different materials to wedge open shells to get what's inside.

It's a big change for a bird like me to go to a new place full of new people. I'm warming up to my cage and foster family, but it did take me a while to stop retreating to the other side of the cage when people came to talk to me. FOTA has changed my diet which I'm told is much healthier than my previous meals of sunflower seeds. I guess birdie bread and chop aren't so bad! After some time to bond I now get to be out of my cage and fly around which I'm very excited about!

Out in the wild Goffin's live in a relatively small area, so threats pose a much greater risk to them. Habitat loss combined with continued poaching has caused a decline in their population, leading to the classification of Near Threatened.

Goffin's unfortunately have also been persecuted as a crop pest and hunted for food in some regions of Indonesia.

What I'm up to Now

I'm in a Foster to Adopt Home!

I got checked out by the great team at Burloak Animal Hospital and am in relatively good health. Veggies have been added to my diet (every parrot should eat) for more vitamins, but otherwise my body condition is in good shape. I'm coming out of my shell a bit at my foster home and they are showering me with love and treats! My favourite activity has been meowing back and forth with one of their cats ðŸ˜‚
