Hello my name is George!
Amazona amazonica
I am an Orange-Winged Amazon who is about 45 years old. I entered FOTA's program in May 2026. I was apart of the same family for 40 years and as my people aged they unfortunately got sick. They knew they could no longer provide the level of care I needed.
Did you know there are 33 different types of Amazon parrots alone? We all have green bodies, but normally have an extra colour or two that separates us from each other. Many of us are named by what colour we are other than green and where that colour is. For example I have an orangey patch on my wing, but I also have that same beautiful colour on my face with added blue on my face and wings!

About Me and Other
Orange-Winged Amazons
My ancestors lived in South America including Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, and more. These birds are often seen in savannahs and forests where there are trees available for nesting. They are very social and flock in numbers from a dozen to over 200 individuals! In the wild, many Amazons only live into their 20s to 30s, whereas I, as a companion bird, could comfortably live 60-90 years with proper care.
Amazons are often seen as an appealing "pet" because, like the African Greys, they are very good at talking. The Orange-Winged Amazons do tend to be less chatty than their Double Yellow Headed cousins. Some ​​amazons are even quite good at singing and opera seems to be the favourite genre of many individuals. However, just like all companion birds they take lots of care, time, and training to live happy lives in captivity.
George is a handsome boy who needs some extra patience and attention. He loves spending time with you from in his cage, likes target training, and accepts scritches from his trusted people but since he was cage bound for 45 years does need some practice interacting with people. If you have the time to dedicate to helping him integrate into your family, George is the bird for you
Unlike Yellow-Naped, Red-Crowned, and Yellow-Headed Amazons the Orange-Winged Amazons are not endangered, but of least concern. However, they have experienced declining numbers due to habitat loss, trapping for the pet trade, and being hunted as food.
What I'm up to Now
I am in FOTA's Foster Program!
My foster parents have been doing a fantastic job helping me transition from my old home. They have diet converted me onto tropican pellets, taught me how to target train, and supply me with lots of scritches! We are working on enriching out of cage time (I need some encouragement to explore outside my safe space) and hopefully slowly some handling too. I'm looking forward to learning more skills that will help me find my forever home!

I'm not quite ready for adoption yet, but if you are interested in adopting me start the vetting process now so you are approved for when I am ready! I would do best with a patient primary caregiver who is willing to continue working with me to grow my confidence interacting with people. I would do well in a home with other birds who can teach me people aren't so scary!
