Hello my name
is Nixon!

Cacatua moluccensis

DSC09335-Enhanced-NR.jpg

I am a 32 year old Moluccan Cockatoo who entered into The Friends of the Aviary's foster program in September of 2024.

My elderly owners both passed away and unfortunately neither of their adult children were able to take me in. I needed to leave my old home asap since the lease was ending!

They wanted to make sure I was well taken care of so reached out to FOTA. Through their help I found a loving foster family who cared for me until I found my forever family!

About Me and Other Moluccan Cockatoos

Moluccan Cockatoos live in large flocks in the lowland forested areas of the Indonesia Maluku Islands. Did you know, there are 21 different species of cockatoos in Indonesia? Moluccans are best known for the salmon colouring in their large crests.

I am currently battling some health issues as I have arthritis in almost all my joints and have some blindness in my right eye. FOTA, my foster family, and Campus Estates Animal Hospital are working hard to make me comfortable and help me regain some of my eyesight!

Cockatoos have big personalities! They can often be quite noisy but are also playful, energetic, and engaging. Their impressive crests give us insight into how they feel. Considering other body language a raised crest can indicate excitement or aggression.

Nixon loves to bob up and down and wiggle which is called my dancing. I also enjoy making repetitive noises of my own as if I'm singing along!

Unfortunately, Moluccans are listed by the IUCN as Endangered since their wild population has decreased by more than 50% over the past three generations!

What I'm up to Now

I Got Adopted!

I was adopted in October 2025 and am so excited to be with my forever family! I fell in love with my new dad and stepped right up to him the first time we met. I couldn't believe he didn't take me home with him after our first Meet and Greet 😂 I'm loving dancing and cuddling with my new family and am excited for this next chapter in my life!

See me as an ambassador bird at some of FOTA's events!
